Marvelous Marigolds

Updated: Jun 11

How This Underappreciated Flower Can Support Optimal Eye Health and Much More!*

Marigold flowers are often underappreciated in the world of medicinal plants. These vibrant flowers are beautiful to behold and a powerhouse of support for healthy vision.* Their golden blooms contain two carotenoids (lutein and zeaxanthin), that both have naturally occurring components essential for maintaining the structural integrity and visual performance of our eyes.* How can a simple flower pack such a punch?

The human eye is a sensitive organ with a complex system of structures that work together to make sense of the world around us. The macula is a small area that sits at the back of the retina and is responsible for central vision. The macula has a high concentration of photoreceptor cells (the cells that detect light), and when light enters the eye, the macula works with the brain to allow you to see what’s in your li. It is also responsible for our color vision. It’s here in the macula that lutein and zeaxanthin come together to help defend our visual health.*

Carotenoids are naturally occurring pigments that are found predominantly in plants. Carotenoids are responsible for the vivid reds, yellows, and oranges you see in many fruits, vegetables, and flowering plants. They serve an important role in human health as they are a great source of vitamin A and act as antioxidants.* Another well-known carotenoid is beta-carotene.

These botanical compounds have a host of health benefits for skin, immune, and eye health.* Lutein and zeaxanthin are prized for their antioxidant properties, helping to defend against harmful light frequencies.*  Daily, our eyes are bombarded by high-energy light waves, such as ultraviolet rays, but also blue light frequencies from the screens of devices we use, like phones and computers. This puts continuous strain on our eyes.

Unfortunately, our bodies do not produce carotenoids and cannot break down lutein and zeaxanthin on their own. We have to be aware that we eat enough of the right foods to support our most abundant health. As always, our creator has made it easy to identify the foods that help us in this healthful endeavor. Colors! Look for colorful fruits, leafy greens, and even marigolds! Yes, marigolds have edible leaves that range in taste from mildly spicy to citrusy. They make a beautiful and healthy garnish for many meals. It can even be a great way to encourage kids to try something new and novel.

There are two simple ways to maintain eye health naturally. One is to eat a diet rich in colorful fruits and vegetables. (At Azure, we know it always starts with the basics. Eat good food grown in healthy soil.) The second is to reduce screen time. It sounds easy, but with our lives and livelihoods often centered around screens, finding that balance can be hard. This is why AzureWell offers Advanced Eye Support. Each bottle harnesses the equivalent of 540 extracted marigold flowers! This potent and pure source of crucial carotenoids may be just the extra boost you need to keep your eyes healthy and happy.*
